NORD Drivesystems has expanded its NORDAC PRO SK 500P variable frequency drive (VFD) series, pushing the power ceiling to 200 hp with the addition of four new frame sizes. The move brings the total frame sizes to ten, covering a performance range from 0.33 to 200.0 hp. For startups and operators building automated systems for intralogistics, packaging, bulk material handling, and airport baggage handling, this expansion signals that NORD is targeting higher-power applications without sacrificing the compact, cabinet-friendly form factor that defines the series.

The NORDAC PRO VFDs retain their book-style design, enabling side-by-side installation without gaps. This is a practical advantage for system integrators who need to pack more power into limited cabinet space. The reduced volume directly translates to lower installation costs and more efficient use of real estate inside control panels. For founders designing modular automation cells, this form factor can simplify thermal management and wiring.

From a technical standpoint, the expanded series supports both three-phase asynchronous motors and IE5+ permanent magnet synchronous motors. The combination of high-precision control and strong overload capabilities makes these drives suitable for constant torque applications — think conveyors, hoists, and pumps. The basic SK 500P variants include full PLC functionality, four switchable parameter sets, an integrated brake chopper, POSICON positioning control, and energy-saving functions. They also feature a CANopen interface and can be parameterized via plug-in control module, NORDCON software, or a mobile app.

The advanced versions (SK 530P, SK 540P, SK 550P) add more I/O, SK TU5 plug-in control modules, SK CU5 extension modules, and an integrated multi-protocol Ethernet interface. This Ethernet connectivity is critical for modern factories that rely on real-time communication protocols like PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, or EtherCAT. The USB interface allows voltage-free programming even without mains connection, and the microSD card slot simplifies parameter cloning across multiple drives — a time-saver for large deployments.

Functional safety is addressed with STO (Safe Torque Off) and SS1 (Safe Stop 1) options on SK 510P and above. For startups building collaborative or safety-rated systems, having integrated safety reduces the need for external safety relays and simplifies certification.

NORD's NORDCON commissioning and diagnostic software is free and provides a uniform interface for parameterization. For operators managing fleets of drives, the software's diagnostic capabilities can reduce downtime by enabling quick troubleshooting and remote monitoring via the RJ12 diagnostic interface.

For the robotics and automation ecosystem, this expansion is a signal that NORD is serious about competing in the mid-to-high power segment traditionally dominated by larger drives. The compact footprint and integrated features lower the barrier for startups to adopt high-performance drives without redesigning cabinets. The wireless diagnostics and multi-protocol support also align with Industry 4.0 trends, making it easier to collect data and optimize energy consumption.

Founders evaluating drive suppliers should consider the total cost of ownership: the NORDAC PRO series reduces installation space and wiring complexity, while the free software eliminates licensing fees. The ability to handle both asynchronous and synchronous motors also future-proofs investments as motor technology evolves.
