DoorDash has secured FAA Part 135 air carrier certification, a milestone that allows the food delivery giant to operate its own drone delivery network under the newly announced DoorDash Air program. The certification, granted on July 30, 2026, comes nearly a year after the company unveiled its autonomous ground robot Dot, signaling a deepening commitment to building delivery automation in-house.

The FAA Part 135 certification is notoriously rigorous. DoorDash confirmed it passed a five-stage evaluation process covering aircraft airworthiness, maintenance programs, safety management systems, hazardous materials handling, and operational documentation. Only eight drone operators in the U.S. have cleared this process, placing DoorDash in an exclusive group that includes established players like Wing and Zipline.

Harrison Shih, head of DoorDash Air, stated: "We want drone delivery to work for any merchant, anywhere. We're building the full stack to make that possible from the ground infrastructure to the drone itself, and the handoff systems that make it work together seamlessly." This full-stack approach includes proprietary drones, ground infrastructure for merchant handoffs, and the Autonomous Delivery Platform — a software layer that routes each order to the most efficient mode: Dasher, Dot, drone, autonomous vehicle, or third-party sidewalk robot.

Why build in-house when DoorDash already partners with Wing for drone deliveries? The company's spokesperson explained: "We believe the best way to help local businesses scale with growing consumer demand is through a multimodal delivery network powered by more operators, not fewer." By owning the drone technology, DoorDash gains control over costs, integration, and scalability. The ground infrastructure being developed is designed to be interoperable across drone providers, suggesting DoorDash aims to become a platform for multiple autonomous delivery modes rather than a single-vendor shop.

For founders and operators in the last-mile delivery space, DoorDash's move carries several signals. First, the barrier to entry for drone delivery is lowering as regulatory pathways become clearer — but the capital and time required for FAA certification remain substantial. Second, the multimodal routing platform approach indicates that the winning strategy may not be owning every vehicle type, but orchestrating them intelligently. Third, DoorDash's investment in both ground robots (Dot) and aerial drones suggests that hybrid fleets will be the norm, not a niche.

The certification also opens up midrange deliveries — those too far for a sidewalk robot but too short for a human driver to be cost-effective. DoorDash noted that these midrange trips are often "less attractive to Dashers," making them a sweet spot for drone economics. Startups building drone hardware or delivery orchestration software should watch how DoorDash integrates its own drones with third-party providers, as this could set a template for the industry.

However, challenges remain. Scaling drone operations beyond pilot cities requires navigating local regulations, airspace integration, and public acceptance. DoorDash's in-house approach also means it bears the full cost of R&D, manufacturing, and maintenance — a bet that vertical integration will pay off in the long run.

For now, DoorDash Air is live with the FAA's blessing, and the company is positioning itself as both an operator and an infrastructure provider. The message to the startup ecosystem is clear: the race to own the last mile is no longer just about software — it's about hardware, certification, and multimodal orchestration.
