Boston Dynamics is using a free July 22 webinar to lay out concrete design rules for human-robot interaction that prioritize predictability over anthropomorphism as its electric Atlas humanoid moves into commercial trials.

The session, titled "The Art Behind Human-Robot Interaction," features Mario Bollini, director of human-robot interaction, and Leland Hepler, distinguished product designer. Bollini previously led product management for both Spot and Atlas, scaling the quadruped to thousands of units before guiding the humanoid from R&D pivot to production launch at CES. Hepler brings 14 years of character animation experience from Disney Studios plus prior UX leadership at Rethink Robotics.

The core thesis is that trust emerges when robots signal intent through anticipatory cues and visible "thinking" behaviors rather than attempting to look human. This approach directly informs how the electric Atlas is engineered to operate autonomously next to workers without safety cages.

Bollini and Hepler will explain the integration of classic animation timing and motion principles with engineering and AI to make Atlas actions legible in shared workspaces. The emphasis on mechanical form over mimicry is presented as the practical route past the uncanny valley for industrial settings.

A second thread covers the impact of large language models on interaction design. Instead of rigid pre-programmed scripts, LLMs enable more fluid, context-aware exchanges that reduce the cognitive load on nearby humans and support faster task handoffs.
